History

The ancient Scottish greeting, "Ceud mile failte" which graces the inn's crest, means "one hundred thousand welcomes" and embodies the spirit of Carnegie House. The inn is modeled after Greywalls, a Scottish inn overlooking the tenth tee of Muirfield golf course.

Andrew Carnegie, steel baron and philanthropist left a lasting mark on the Centre County community. Remnants of his iron-ore mining pits are still visible throughout the front nine holes of Toftrees championship golf course. Believing that "the man who dies rich dies disgraced", he gave not only of his fortune, but of himself– donating the Carnegie Library to Penn State and serving for 17 years as a University trustee. Carnegie's Pond Bank Farm is now part of Toftrees, site of the inn which bears his name.
